SciFi and Fantasy Art Dante and Virgil encounter Cerberus by Christopher ´Topher´ Allen Shepard

This is a scene from Dante's inferno, from the 6th CANTO; 'The third circle of hell' (the hell of the gluttons where Cerberus dwells). This is where Dante and the poet Virgil encounter Cerberus. Cerberus is a giant three-headed dog who rules over the level of hell where greedy people and gluttons go when they die. (Note the swollen stomach on Cerberus from engorging himself on the tortured bodies of his victims (this was pointed out in the Inferno)) The big guy in the foreground is Virgil, he's Dante's guide through the different levels of hell, the smaller more frightened man clinging to him, is Dante.
Note: This drawing was completed in two nights, a total of about 8 hours of work, for a college homework assignment in 1999. India ink pen, over pencil, on 10x17 bristol board.
I tried to imitate the style of GUSTAVE DORE when I drew this.

5 Sep 2004	Draconas	Loading... Look at all the tortured souls... I once did a project on Cerberus and sculpted a perfectly dreadful representation out of Sculpi. It was fun, and Cerberus probably my favorite thing about greek mythology. (if you can call him a thing without him making his belly more swollen by eating you, although I don't really know if he is tempermental, or picky, as in he only eats tortured souls. I'm not a tortured soul, so I'm safe. I think. Anyway, amazing picture, amazing detail, amazing all around. -Draconos (a.k.a. Shiloh, Dingo, Mad, or Maddy)
3 Sep 2005	Mikey	Loading... Absolutely amazing. I do have one suggestion though, the since the people in that layer of hell were Gluttons, they would be obese rightio? A lot of the clearly shown gluttons have nicer bodies then models. Other then that, the peice is simply amazing.

I love devil may cry 3, and just now im learning that alot of the story seems to be from the divine comedy- dante, virgil (vergil in the game) as his power hungry antagonist brother, and cerberus as the guardian of the tower that is the gate to hell... Very interesting... nice drawing too!
12 Dec 2006	Tanya	Loading... This is a terrific piece as far as detail and i'm glad that it wasn't based from the doberman or pit bull. but i do have to agree that those gluttons do look pretty ripped which is kinda weird.

22 Sep 2008	Anon.	Loading... Too bad Cerberus’ tail does not have snakes, nor does his mane.. seeing that he was the offspring of mother who was half snake and a father who had hundreds of snakes for heads.
